Before choosing a large orthopedic dog bed for your large dog, you need to measure your dog and consider a few other things.

Measure your dogs height from floor to head, and its width from nose to base of tail. You are now better equipped to determine the size of dog bed required.

Pay attention to your dog’s sleeping profile. Does he or she stretch full out while sleeping, or curl up? Most dog beds only accommodate one of the two sleeping styles. If your dog does not seem to have a single style of sleeping, then you could opt for a sofa style bed. Sofa styled large dog beds are both long and wide to accommodate a stretch sleeping style, sofa style beds also have bolstered sides to support the curling sleeper.

If your dog prefers to sleep in a curl or ball style, then measure the diameter of the dog’s body while sleeping. This will be the measurement that you will use when purchasing a curl style bed.

For stretch sleeping style dogs, you now need to size the bed taking the measurements that you obtained earlier. A long stretch bed should have an extra 12 inches to your dog’s size on both dimensions to ensure your pet has enough room to sleep comfortably. Allow an extra 8 inches on the diameter of a curl style bed.

Finally know your material. There a variety of fillers used in orthopedic dog beds. How do you know which has the best quality? We only need to look at the material used in the equivalent mattresses for humans. For their mattress, memory foam is chosen for maximum comfort and support. Egg crate foam is only used in human mattress toppers. As it is not considered to be good enough for humans, why should it be so for your dog. If your dog is large, then you dog is probably also heavy and maximum support for your pet’s weight and body is needed.

With the above simple criteria you should now be able to better identify great orthopedic dog beds for your dog.
