The Ten Best Dog Training Tips
Sponsored linksThere are many different approaches to training a dog, and all of them differ in their methods and acts. However, there are a few things that all methods have in common. The following is a list of ten dog training tips you could employ, no matter what training plan you use, and it will help you to make training your dog a lot simpler and more enjoyable.
1. Ascertain your dominance. Dogs are pack animals that typically live in groups, which is why one is always known as “Alpha-Dog.” Within all packs, there is an alpha-dog who is deemed to be the head of the pack. Dogs that are members of the pack will always follow the alpha-dog’s lead and submit to him. Your role is to institute yourself as the “alpha-dog” over your dog. If you do not do this, your dog will think that he is the alpha and will attempt to do whatever they want, whenever they want. Enforcing your authority and allowing your dog to see that you are the leader will make a big difference in training him more successfully.
2. Apply some patience. Having patience will take you far if you have it during the training of your dog. Most likely, your dog will not pick up on the manners or tricks you would like them to acquire overnight. Even if you are on the verge of giving up, your dog can still learn, you just need to be patient.
3. Never stop training. No matter how hard it may seem, keep pushing the training. In a few days, some dogs might have the ability to learn a new ability or trick. Other dogs may take longer. One day your dog may look like he has acquired a new behavior, and then, to your surprise, they will misbehave once again. You have to work persistently with training your dog to make sure that the behavior stays with him.
4. Playtime is important. Your life should not revolve around training. You need to play with your pet, and you pet needs to play with you. Take time out of your day to play with your dog, and you will find training to be a lot simpler.
5. Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise. Even though you are training, your dog still needs exercise. To keep your dog at optimal health, and to keep them burning off energy that is excessive, exercise your dog each day.
6. Don’t expect miracles. You shouldn’t expect things out of your dog that are impossible. Dogs have more difficulty with some tricks. Both you and your dog will be much happier if you keep your goals for your pet well within realistic boundaries.
7. Bribery should never be used. Don’t use an extreme amount of goodies or rewards to make your pet bend to your will. You don’t want your dog to only act like you want them to for a treat, but instead you want them to mind you regardless. Praise and occasional treats are important as reinforcement for positive behavior but you will end up disappointed later on if you use treats to get them to do what you want.
8. Keep things consistent. As soon as you have enforced a training procedure and agenda, stand by it. It is a well known fact that dogs thrive with routines and require a program. You will make your dog very happy and your training will be a success if you stick to a schedule.
9. Punish your dog kindly. Discipline is important if your dog should misbehave. However, discipline is to be stern, not cruel. If you simply use a firm tone, you will receive a reaction that is positive, rather than if you had screamed at your dog.
10. Exercise family training. Your whole family needs to be involved in the training for it to stick properly. Things will be much easier if every member of your house employs the same techniques of training.
