Stop Puppy Biting
Sponsored linksIt’s amazing how much it hurts when those puppies get a hold of you with those sharp teeth. We need to eliminate this nasty little habit of biting before it goes any further. In order to stop puppy biting different methods may have to be tried. Don’t reward any annoying habits. In order for your puppy to grow up to be the best dog that he can be it is our responsibility to help him. Dog behavior is never “good” or “bad” it’s just behavior. Stopping habits like biting needs to be done no matter how difficult the task.
When puppies play, they bite because that is the way they have always done it. It is probably the first problem every new owner will have to overcome because it is so common for puppies to nip and bite. All new puppies take part in this behavior, but as a new member of your family actions will need to be taken to control it.
When your puppy bites you ankles or hand give him a sharp tap on the nose and say “NO, no biting”. If you tap the nose softly the puppy is only going to think that you are playing. A timid correction has no value, and the bad behavior could become worse. One good tap on the muzzle, that gets the puppies attention could stop puppy biting. Here is another method, the next time he bites, quickly grab him by his nose and look him in the eye and boldly say “NO” and this should give him the idea that biting is wrong. Some puppies will demand some patience on your part and others will pick things up quickly. A verbal correction should be all that is needed once he understands what is expected of him. This verbal “NO” command is going to prove to be very handy when he starts chewing on your shoes, socks, newspapers or anything else laying around for him to test his teeth on.
Doggy bones and chew toys have been used successfully in helping keep the pup from chewing up your stuff. The chew toys and doggy bones will also come in very handy during the teething stage when he will need something to chew on to help eliminate the pain. Choose the right kind of toys that can hang in there for a long time under the intense gnawing pressure of your puppies sharp little teeth. Be careful of toys that are to small or poorly made because they can break off into s tiny pieces and get stuck in their throat.
To stop puppy biting you need to stay away from to much rough housing with your pup as this type of playing could encourage some biting. What ever method you choose to fix the problem, remember, it is going to take some time. All puppies go through certain stages in their life and puppy biting happens to be one of them. Worry not, as long as you stay firm and patient, the biting stage will pass.
