Stopping Dog Aggression to Other Dogs
Sponsored linksThere are lots of reasons dogs can become aggressive. Aggression is a natural part of their personality. Just to be able to survive, dogs needed to be aggressive. Aggression was needed in order to be able to hunt and catch food, and to protect their families and territory. Despite thousand of years of domestication, dogs retain the aggression instinct, and if a dog becomes overly aggressive you will benefit from knowing how to control your pet. By recognizing your dog’s body language you can see when he is about to become aggressive and be ready to control it. If you understand what the reasons that cause dog aggression, you can become pro-active and stop the aggression from happening.
One way a dog will display dominance is by putting their head above the other dog’s head and maybe also putting their forelegs on the other animal’s back or shoulders. Growling and displaying teeth along with raising the hair on their back are also displays dogs use when becoming more aggressive. Stopping dog to dog aggression should be done before this is allowed to happen. At this stage, unless the second dog doesn’t act submissively, a dogfight may be likely. This is a very common type of dog behavior and I am sure you have seen it many times before. By paying attention to your dog while walking him, these type of aggressive behaviors are noticeable, and you can avoid what ever is causing the disturbance.
If you try the tip below, I think your dog’s attitude will change for the better, once he knows the fun of having a doggy friend.
- Bring your aggressive dog with you to the house of a friend who has a dog that is non-aggressive. If you have a male dog, I’d strongly suggest starting this “friend” training with a female dog. It is also a good idea either at your friend’s place or in a neutral territory like a park, so your dog doesn’t feel like he is protecting his turf.
- By keeping both of the dogs on leashes, you retain control in case the dogs react aggressively. Remain far enough apart that the dogs can’t reach each other, and have the dogs assume the sit position. Keep your dog in the sit position and do not let him become agitated or aggressive. Use lots of praise and a nice treat for a reward to show him you are happy when he stops his aggressive posture. It is necessary to act in a consistent fashion to obtain fast and effective results. Don’t emphasize the negatives by yelling at your dog.
- Dogs greet each other first by sniffing each other’s faces, so as long as they are calm it is time to let them say “Hi”. When relaxed dogs greet each other neither one is displaying teeth, growling or raising hackles. Your pet is already on the way to having stopped his aggressive behavior if he is still relaxed at this time.
- For future meetings, try using different locations to check the aggressive dog’s attitude. Repeated meetings with the other dog will eventually desensitize your dog from his aggressive response to seeing another dog.
- Once he seemed like he enjoys his new “friend’s” company the final test is in your dog’s own yard. In case your dog acts aggressively because he is on his home turf, have the dogs on leashes to see how they are going to act. If your dog does remain calm, then it is OK to unleash them and let them play together. What a relief it is to see your dog stop that bad aggressive attitude with other dogs, and actually having fun like a normal dog should.
Although this is just the start, you now knew how to introduce your doggy to new dog friends, and stopped his really bad dog on dog aggression problem.
If you want to see good results stopping your dog’s aggression towards other dogs, try introducing him to a new dog friend. For more articles about solving dog behavior problems and dog obedience training advice please click here- www.BehaveDoggy.com
